Updated 4th May 2020

This article will try to shed some light on the current COVID-19 State of Emergency, in particular on the latest restrictions and limits for  travelling to, and travelling within Italy. In order to find the most up to date and authentic information we have researched official Italian governmental sites or sites recommended by the government.

It is advisable to consult only official sources such as:

The State of Emergency is currently set until the end of

31 July 2020

According to the rules in force since March 28, 2020, you can enter Italy only for the following reasons:

  • Health
  • Work
  • Absolute urgency

(It will be necessary to indicate in a specific, concrete and verifiable way the reasons for the move and the urgency and necessity)

Travel for tourism is not allowed

The following two forms will need to be completed at the arrival at each port:

Once in Italy, the 14-day quarantine will be mandatory and you will not be allowed to travel by public transport even upon arrival at the airport.

Transport from the airport to the place where the quarantine will take place is allowed only to one cohabiting or cohabitant person in the same domicile as the transported person.

Even those who enter Italy with their own vehicle will have to respect the quarantine

For anyone entering Italy it will be mandatory to notify the local health authority responsible for the territory.

For those who, arriving in Italy, have no place to pass quarantine or are unable to reach it (cannot be picked up, cannot find a hotel room available …), then they must spend the period of isolation in a place decided by the Civil protection, with expenses to be paid by the interested party.

Those who enter Italy for work can still use the possibility of postponing the start of the quarantine for 72 hours (extendable for another 48), to the extent that this is absolutely necessary.

The following are excluded from the above rules:

  • cross-border workers,
  • health workers,
  • passengers and
  • freight crews.

For any symptoms that arise once you arrive in Italy, you must promptly notify the local health authority responsible for the territory.

It is essential to read every update of the laws in force on the official website of the Farnesina before starting any type of trip to Italy and any other country and also to check the rules of the destination territory.

Currently, in Italy, travel from region to region is not allowed except for proven reasons of work or absolute and proven need and it is not possible to meet. You are however allowed to meet, with due protections and distances, only family members but not friends.

We recommend the use of the mask in any place where other people are expected (the mask is mandatory) and the safety social distance.

In general, for those who violate the measures to contain the epidemic, an administrative sanction in cash is foreseen (from €400 to €3,000 euros).

If the violation occurs through the use of a vehicle, the penalties can reach up to €4,000 euros.
